Standard garage doors in our area are 8 9 16 and 18 wide. Standard garage door sizes range from single doors to commercial doors. Double garage doors have a width of 12 to 16 feet. The span above the door opening is framed with a long header that supports the wall area above the door and this header will need to be raised or rebuilt in order to increase the overall door size.

Double car garage doors typically start at 12 feet wide and move. A garage will need backroom that equals the door height plus 18 inches and possibly more. 1 2 or 1 in one direction of the other will won t typically. If there isn t enough room above the opening this can t be done without raising the roof of the garage.

Measure the backroom the distance from the garage door opening to the back wall of the garage. Always consider the car dimensions while designing a door opening and choosing right size of the garage door. Standard systems require 10 inches of headroom while some require 12 inches while garage door openers often require an additional three inches of clearance. Standard single car garage door widths start at 8 feet for single car garages and move up in 12 inch increments to 10 feet wide.
